The Kentucky State Penitentiary is the state’s oldest prison and is located at 266 Water Street in Eddyville, Kentucky. The facility opened in 1886 with an inmate correctional population of 850 and a staff of 350. It is a maximum security state prison operated by the Kentucky Department of Corrections. This facility houses death row inmates. An after hours education program designed to allow inmates with daytime work assignments the opportunity to attend school and work toward a general equivalency diploma.
Kentucky State Penitentiary Visits
Pursuant to Kentucky Department of Corrections policy, General Population and Outside Detail visits are Saturday and Sunday 7:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. (except 1st and 3rd Saturdays), Protective Custody – Friday and 1st Saturday of each month 7:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m., and Special Security Unit (Death Row) – Thursdays and 3rd Saturday of each month 7:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. All Inmate visitation day is determined by the last digits of the Inmate’s Department of Corrections Prison Registration Number, odd or even.
Visitors who dress in a manner that would generally be considered sexually suggestive, eccentric, provocative or may otherwise disrupt the positive family atmosphere provided by the Kentucky State Penitentiary staff will not be allowed admittance into the visiting area and must leave the institutional grounds.
